Assuming a beautiful appearance and being called Annatar ("Lord of Gifts"), Sauron appeared to the elves in 1200, trying to gain their trust. He called himself the messenger of the Valar and said that he had been sent by them to Middle-earth to help the elves arrange everything as it was in Valinor.
